Words from Tom
Why are we taking this “Search for Significance” journey as a body in our current series? That’s a great question! As I was reading the other morning (mainly for myself), I wrote an answer to that question in the beginning of my Search for Significance book. Here’s a synopsis of what I wrote:
“Since we as a body take our mission seriously ‘to multiply Christ-followers who love God, love others and serve both,’ then we need to help each person become a multiplying Christ-follower. But what can pull a Christ-follower (a disciple) off base in our journey to love God, love others and serve both? I can’t love God if I’m trying to perform for Him, somehow win His approval, still live with a sense of blame hanging over my head with punishment to follow, and have shame in my life. I can’t love others if I’m trying to please others, meet their standards, and gain their approval. I can’t love others if I’m living unworthy of their love, hiding in the shame. I can’t serve both if I … “
You get the idea. If my self-worth is based on performance and approval, then my growth as a Christ-follower will be hindered. To be a growing, multiplying disciple who models the character of Jesus (loving God, loving others) and priorities of Jesus (serving both), I need to look at the baggage in my life—the lies I believe—and get rid of them. If I believe the lie—I die. I need to receive the truth—what God says about me—and LIVE! That was a mouthful. We need to take this journey so that as a body we can challenge each other, giving spiritual guidance along the way. So, take the journey, with honesty (Psalm 139:23,24) to grow into a multiplying Christ-follower.
Hang tough ‘cuz it’s a Jesus thing
