Special Announcements

PROMISELAND AND CHILDREN’S CHURCH: This Sunday, September 12^th, Promiseland and Children’s Church will be starting up again with a couple of changes that we want you to be aware of.  We will be running these two programs in the same way that the Children’s Summer Sunday School was run this summer: 

• Both Promiseland and Children’s Church will run for the entire service rather than having the kids dismissed from the service as we have done in the past.
• We will continue the check-in procedure that we used this summer when you drop-off and pick-up your child.

Based on the good feedback we received this summer, we feel continuing with this same format will enable our ministry to your children to be very effective.  The only other difference is that Promiseland will be for preschool and kindergarten-age children, and Children’s Church will now include 1^st through 5^th graders.  As in the past, Promiseland will take place in West 2 classroom, and Children’s Church will be in West 1.  If you have questions about the children’s program, feel free to contact the church office (380-2422) or talk with Bryan Gilbert, our Children and Youth Shepherd.   

YOUTH BANANA SPLIT BLOW-OUT: If you’re in grades 6-12, or have a child who is, make plans to join us at the church on Sunday, Sept. 12, at 6 p.m. The youth leaders are planning a fun (and informational) event to unveil the plans for the upcoming year. We’ll also enjoy some friendly parent vs. teen competition, as well as a make-your-own banana split bar. So come on out, enjoy some ice cream, and find out what cool things the youth will be doing this year. Questions? See Virginia DeVenney or Heath England.

BETH MOORE SIMULCAST:  Attention, Ladies!  On Saturday, September 18th, we’re planning to head down to First Baptist Church of Clinton for a Beth Moore simulcast.  These events are always refreshing and encouraging as Beth shares from her heart what the Lord is teaching her.   It will run from 8:30 a.m.—4:00 p.m., and the cost is $25.   We will go out for lunch together during the 90-minute mid-day break.  Contact Janelle Vignery (668-2435) if you are interested in getting away for this day of fellowship and teaching.

CORNERSTONE CONNECT:   If you are a new to Cornerstone, we invite you to take a closer look at our church by attending “Cornerstone Connect” this Sunday, September 12th at 9:30 a.m. (during the Bible class time.)  This informal discussion is a chance for you to learn more about Cornerstone’s vision and values, and also about the opportunities available to you here at the church.   The group will meet in Pastor Tom’s office.  Hope to see you there!

LADIES’ STUDY ON EPHESIANS:  An evening and morning bible study on the book of Ephesians will be available beginning in September.   This is a 15-week inductive Bible study using the Life Change series by NavPress.  These studies cover individual books of the bible in a verse-by-verse format, incorporating historical insights, word definitions, questions, and application assignments.  This particular book will examine truths about the believer’s identity in Christ, and will also look at the topics of unity, submission, and steadfastness.  Kelly Scheeberger will be leading the evening study at her home (1105 Glendale Drive in Raymore) starting tomorrow, September 9^th at 7 p.m.  Please call her at 816-318-1724 if you are interested in her study.  Suzie Barnett will lead the daytime study at Cornerstone beginning Monday, September 13^th, at 10:00 a.m.   Suzie can be reached at 816-380-7181 if you would like to participate in this daytime group.

 BREAKFAST IS SERVED THIS SUNDAY! To kick off our fall Sunday school quarter, some of the excellent chefs from our body will treat us to breakfast during the Bible class hour (9:30 a.m.) this Sunday, and there will be information available at that time about the new classes and small groups that will be starting up this fall.

FROZEN SHOWER – SHHHH!  Dr. Martha Schroeder, the chiropractor with whom Sarah Sharp practices, has invited us to participate in a “Frozen Shower” for Justin and Sarah, who last week welcomed baby Raymond Dean into their family.  Instead of traditional baby shower items, Dr. Martha is asking us to bless the Sharp family with quick and simple meals.   To join in this shower, just prepare a meal that is easily frozen, or gather the ingredients for a favorite meal and include the recipe, and drop it off at Schroeder Chiropractic (207 E. Wall Street).  Since Dr. Martha wants this to be a surprise, please take your meal sometime during the next two weeks while Sarah is still on maternity leave.  If you have questions, contact Dr. Martha at 816-797-9586.

REMEMBER – NO BIBLE CLASSES THIS WEEK:   This Sunday, August 29^th, there will be no adult or children’s classes during the 9:30-10:30 a.m. Bible class hour so that our teachers can have a break.  Please note:  there will also be no Kids’ Time church this week.

A NOTE FROM PASTOR TOM:  It’s time to pray! As elders, we have been gathering on Sunday mornings in my office to pray.  God has prompted us to move to a larger room and open it up to everyone.  So…we want to invite you to join us for prayer on Sunday mornings at 8:30 a.m. in the Fireside room.  We will spend this time praying (not talking about prayer, thinking about prayer, but praying together) for the needs of the body, needs in the room, whatever needs God lays on our hearts to pray.  We know that God listens to His children and we want to come into the throne room of grace for our time of need.  So come and PRAY!  And bring someone along with you.  Please note:  Since there are no Bible classes for the next two Sundays, August 22^nd and 29^th, we will meet to pray at 9:30 instead of 8:30.   Starting on September 5th, we will start meeting at 8:30 again.

GOSPEL CONCERT:  This Saturday, August 21^st, at the Harrisonville Community Church, there will be a southern gospel concert featuring The Bradford Trio, whose members are three young women from Harrisonville: Mendell Bradford, Jennifer Bradford, and Davette Bradford Dean.  They have performed at many song festivals, concerts, and events, and numerous times at Silver Dollar City.  Their current hit single, Angels in the Room, is being played on gospel stations across the country.  The Williams, a nationally-charted group that has been nominated for a Dove Award, will  also be performing.  The doors open at 6:30 p.m., the concert starts at 7 p.m., and a freewill offering will be accepted.

Special Announcements

BURNT DISTRICT FESTIVAL:  This Friday and Saturday, August 13^th and 14^th, is the 1^st Annual Burnt District Festival on the Harrisonville square.  There will be booths set up all around the square, and the Chamber of Commerce has asked us to host one with an inflatable bungee jump.    Justin Sharp, who as our Outreach Team Leader is in charge of this activity, received a call from the Chamber in which they communicated that this festival is going to be a big event and that the bungee booth is one of the main attractions.  Justin could use some workers for the booth, which will be open on Saturday only.   There will be three shifts – one from 10:30-2:00, one from 1:30-5:00, and one from 4:30-7:30, with the overlap built in to train the next shift.   He needs 5 people for each time slot.  If you can help, please contact Justin at 316-215-1676 as soon as possible.

WELCOME HOME LEON!  Leon Casey will be coming home this Saturday from his tour of duty in Iraq.  If you would like to help welcome Leon home, at the high school at about noon there is going to be a yellow ribbon ceremony for their unit when they arrive in town from the airport.

Special Announcements

OPPORTUNITY TO SERVE:  Friday, August 6^th, is Cornerstone’s turn to work at the Food Pantry.  The hours we work are 2:00-5:30 p.m., and you may work all or part of the time as your schedule permits.    It involves standing at a table handing food to people as they come by, similar to our Angel Food distribution.  This is a great way to serve our community in a tangible way.  If you have questions, you may call Doris Friesen at 808-2929.

BAPTISM SERVICE:  On Sunday evening, August 15^th, we will be having a baptism service at the Haffners’ pond.  If you are interested in being baptized, please contact the church office at 380-2422 or office@cornerstonechurch.info.

PRAYER FOR OUR EDUCATION PERSONNEL:  If you work in any way that is connected to a school setting, we would like to pray for you as you are starting this new school year.  This includes public, Christian, and home school teachers, food preparers, school administrators and office staff, and anyone else who serves in an educational setting.  We will be taking some time during the worship service on August 22^nd to lift you up in prayer.   

NO SUNDAY SCHOOL/BIBLE CLASSES ON AUGUST 22, 29^TH, AND SEPTEMBER 5^TH:  In order to give our teachers a break, on August 22^nd and 29^th there will be no adult or children’s classes during the 9:30-10:30 a.m. Bible class time.  Then, to kick off our new quarter, some of the excellent chefs from our body will treat us to breakfast during the Bible class hour on Sunday, September 5^th, and there will be information available at that time about the new classes that will be starting up this fall.  Please note:  There will also be no kids’ time church on these Sundays.  

COMMUNION THIS SUNDAY:  This Sunday, August 8^th, we will be celebrating the Lord’s Supper during the worship service.  Afterwards, there will be men at the doors of the worship center to take a love offering that will be used to help those in our body who have financial needs.

Special Announcements

SHORT BUSINESS MEETING NEXT SUNDAY: This Sunday after the morning worship service, there will be a brief business meeting to discuss and vote on a proposal to support Kyle Gilbert as he joins the staff of Campus Crusade at Missouri State. 

PLEASE PRAY FOR THIS OUTREACH:  This Friday from 10 a.m. to noon at the Mill Walk Mall is the Kids’ Safety and Fun Fair, hosted by West Central Missouri Community Action Agency.  Last year about 100 families came through to receive free school supplies and to hear about resources available to them in the community.  This year, Cornerstone is hosting a booth to give information about our Angel Food ministry.  Sharon Parker, Justin Sharp, and Pastors Tom and Joe will be at the booth to visit with the families as they walk through.  They will be offering a bean bag game and candy for the kids, as well as a drawing to receive a free box of food from Angel Food.  Please pray for good conversations with the people attending as well as for future opportunities to minister to come from this time.

MEN’S BREAKFAST:  There will be a men’s breakfast this Saturday, July 24^th, at 7 a.m. at Cornerstone.  All the men of the church are invited.

CORNERSTONE STARS!  This weekend, our own Danielle, Cody, and Stone Dupree will be appearing in the musical production of Annie presented by the Raytown Arts Council.  The show will run on Friday and Saturday, July 23^rd and 24^th.   It will be presented at Raytown High School, 6019 Blue Ridge Blvd.    Tickets are available at the Raytown Hy-Vee, 9400 E. 350 Hwy, 816-358-9940.

NEW MEMBERS: The elder team is recommending the following people for church membership, to be voted on at the Annual Business Meeting on July 18^th:  Charles and Kathy Clark, Dennis and Joy Parker, Tim and Vickie Reeves, and Beth Zans.  They are also recommending Stan Belk to join the deacon team and Mike Haffner for the elder team.

POTLUCK AND ANNUAL BUSINESS MEETING: This Sunday, July 18^th, there will be a church pot luck dinner, followed by the annual business meeting.  Please bring two side dishes to go with the fried chicken that will be provided.

Deepening Your Relationship with God — This group is designed to help you get started in your Christian life.  See what a difference having a life built on this firm foundation of a relationship with Jesus Christ can make and how exciting it is to see God change us from the inside out.

Facilitator:  Mark Lockard

Jesus in the Old Testament — This class will study the many methods God used to prepare His people, and through them the world, for the coming of His Son.  The focus will be on how the concept of the Messiah was introduced and developed throughout the Old Testament.  Other subjects that may be touched upon are prophecy, the Trinity, and actual appearances of Jesus in Old Testament history.

Your Divine Design — This DVD series with Chip Ingram explores how to discover, develop, and deploy the spiritual gifts God has given to each believer.  Unit titles include “You’re a Masterpiece in the Making”, “How to Discover Your Primary Spiritual Gift”, “How to Develop your Spiritual Gift for Kindgom Impact”, and “Warning: Beware of Spiritual Gift Abuse!”

CHECK YOUR CHURCH MAILBOX: If you are a member of Cornerstone, in your church mailbox there is a copy of our constitution and by-laws with the proposed amendments that we will be voting on in the Annual Meeting on July 18^th.  If you aren’t a member, but would like to see the changes, there are extra copies at the Information Center.

CHICK CHAT: Attention all Ladies!  Let’s gather at Teresa Haffner’s home on Monday, July 12^th, at 7 p.m. to talk about . . . whatever we want to!   One thing we have heard from many women is that we need more times to “hang out” together, and that is what this evening is for.  Bring your favorite snack, dress comfie, and settle in for some time to just BE together. 

While we are talking that evening, we would like to make fleece blankets for the organization, “Soldiers Angels”, which provides blankets to wounded soldiers.  Julie Hicks recently received an email from them saying they are in urgent need of blankets right now, so this is a great chance for us to serve.  If you would like to make a blanket, you will need to purchase two 2-yard pieces of fleece that will make the two sides of the blanket.  (Julie said Hancock Fabrics in Belton currently has fleece on sale.)  The two pieces can be the same color, or they can be coordinating patterns and/or solids.  With the fabric and a pair of scissors, we can make a blanket that will warm a soldier who has been wounded in the service of our country.   If you can’t bring fabric, that is fine – come on out and help someone else with theirs.  Remember to bring scissors!
