Awe & Wonder | It's a Wonderful Life!

Snow or Sunshine.  Fruitcake or Cut-out Cookies.  Wassail or Eggnog. Nativity Scene or Train Set. Santa Claus or Saint Nick. Maybe all of the above – and more?
Whatever ingredients you choose for a magical Christmas, two are absolute necessities: Awe and Wonder. You can’t have a truly Merry Christmas without them. But busyness, struggle, and, well…just life…can strip away the awe and wonder and leave you deflated and cynical instead.
This Advent Season, come get a dose of what you really need.  Put a little Awe back into this season of Wonder.

For many of us, Christmas just isn’t right without curling up and watching the classic tale, “It’s a Wonderful Life!” George Bailey lost the wonder. He began his life with enormous hopes and dreams, and with his beautiful wife Mary at his side, anything seemed possible. But misfortune strikes and he finds himself lost - all the wonder and joy sucked out of his life. He sees no alternative but to end it all. At the very last moment, a supernatural intervention shows him how wonderful his life really is, and the awe and wonder come rushing back! It really IS a wonderful life!

Awe & Wonder | Awesome Assignment

So much goes into Christmas. The families who do it best are the ones who divvy up the assignments, making sure everyone has a job to do. Aunt Stella brings the stuffing and sweet potatoes. Cousin Sam brings the pies and fruitcake. Dad hangs the lights while Mom wraps and hides the gifts.  Everyone helps decorate the tree. What’s the most awesome assignment at Christmas?

Message Notes

When the Messiah was promised to bring restoration and healing to our broken world, the prophets were given the assignment of announcing his coming.

As the time drew nearer, Isaiah comforted the people:

“Comfort, comfort my people,”
says your God.
Speak tenderly to Jerusalem.
Tell her that her sad days are gone
 and her sins are pardoned."
Isaiah 40:1-2

He declared that he had an awesome assignment:

“Listen! It’s the voice of someone shouting,
‘Clear the way through the wilderness
for the Lord!
Make a straight highway through the wasteland
for our God!’"
Isaiah 40:3

John the Baptist picked up that awesome assignment:

"’Who are you?’, they asked...’what do you have to say about yourself?’ John replied in the words of the prophet Isaiah; ‘I am a voice shouting in the wilderness, 'Clear the way for the Lord's coming!'"
John 1:13
“The next day John saw Jesus coming toward him and said, ‘Look! The Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world!’"
John 1:29

We are honored as followers of Jesus to have the same awesome assignment this Christmas:

BE the good news.

SHARE the good news.

Santa and Rudolph.  The Grinch and Cindy-Lou. Who can forget Ralphie, his Dad, and the A Christmas Story family? But do you know the most awesome name of Christmas?

Message Notes

For to us a child is born,
to us a son is given,
and the government will be on his shoulders.
And he will be called:
Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God,
Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.
Isaiah 9:6

A child

A son

A name

Wonderful Counselor

Mighty God

Everlasting Father

Prince of Peace

The government will be on his shoulders.

Hallelujah!

What was the most memorable gift you ever received? What’s the one that you were most thrilled to give? What makes a gift awesome? What kind of gift fills the recipient with awe and wonder?

Message Notes

“Thanks be to God for his indescribable gift!” II Corinthians 9:15
“For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.” John 3:16

The perfect gift must be PERSONAL.

“Today a Savior is born to you!” Luke 2:11

The perfect gift is given to meet a specific NEED.

“Call his name Jesus, for he will save his people from their sins.” Matthew 1:21

The perfect gift is SACRIFICIAL.

“You know the generous grace of our Lord Jesus Christ. Though he was rich, yet for your sakes he became poor, so that by his poverty he could make you rich.” II Corinthians 8:9

Awe & Wonder | Missing the Wonder

From the very first Christmas until this one - 2,017 or so Christmases later - some people are awestruck with wonder, and others wonder what the fuss is all about. What makes the difference?  It’s in the Story.

Message Notes

From the very first Christmas until this one, the world has divided into three groups:

Those who reject the wonder.
Those who wonder what the fuss is all about.
Those who are awestruck with wonder

Herod rejected the wonder.
It threatened his power and position.

Matthew 2

The people of Bethlehem overlooked the wonder.
They were busy with their own priorities.

Luke 2, Matthew 2

The shepherds and the wise men were transformed by the wonder.
The wise men prepared and sought the wonder.
The shepherds were surprised by the wonder, but they immediately responded with joy.

Don’t miss the wonder!

Big | One Word

A really big God has really big plans for you! One of those plans is for you to play a part in the biggest, most significant mission ever. This month discover how this year can be BIG for you in every possible way. Leverage who you are and what you have to be BIGGER than you thought possible.

This New Year's Sunday, Pastor Brenda encouraged us to replace our customary resolutions with just one word that represents what you believe you most need to work with God to accomplish in you throughout 2017. This practice forces clarity and helps us truly focus our efforts, allowing God to transform our character and make us more like Jesus. So, what's your one word? For more information and instruction, check out Pastor Brenda's Blog.

O Holy Night | Fall On Your Knees

On starlit winter nights, skies midnight blue, millions of sparkling snowflakes drift to the earth and totally transform the landscape. Wherever the snowflakes land, the most humble dwelling becomes a snow castle and the muddiest mile a winter wonderland. In the midst of a very unholy time and place, pure holiness and love descended into our world. What happened that night transformed the landscape of every receptive human heart and piece of the planet.
O Holy Night!

"Fall on your knees
Oh hear the angel voices
Oh night divine
Oh night when Christ was born"

Christmas means give and serve.

Message Notes

Christmas means GIVE and SERVE.

Jesus came to GIVE and SERVE.

"For even the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve others and to give his life as a ransom for many."  Matthew 20:28

Jesus-followers GIVE and SERVE.

Giving and serving keeps the Christmas spirit alive all year. It is the JESUS Spirit.

A Thrill Of Hope

On starlit winter nights, skies midnight blue, millions of sparkling snowflakes drift to the earth and totally transform the landscape. The most humble dwelling becomes a snow castle and the muddiest mile a winter wonderland, wherever the snowflakes land. In the midst of a very unholy time and place, pure holiness and love descended into our world. What happened that night transformed the landscape of every receptive human heart and piece of the planet.
O Holy Night!

O Holy Night | Chains Shall He Break

On starlit winter nights, skies midnight blue, millions of sparkling snowflakes drift to the earth and totally transform the landscape. The most humble dwelling becomes a snow castle and the muddiest mile a winter wonderland, wherever the snowflakes land. In the midst of a very unholy time and place, pure holiness and love descended into our world. What happened that night transformed the landscape of every receptive human heart and piece of the planet.
O Holy Night!

"Truly He taught us to love one another
His law is love and His gospel is peace
Chains shall He break for the slave is our brother"

You will find yourself fitting into every wonderful thing God wants to provide for his dearly loved child.

Message Notes

Since God loves sinners, and my performance is not what gets me in, what’s the big deal about sin?

“For sin shall no longer be your master because you are not under the law, but under grace." Romans 6:24 (6:11-14, NIV)
"From now on, think of it this way: Sin speaks a dead language that means nothing to you; God speaks your mother tongue, and you hang on every word. You are dead to sin and alive to God. That’s what Jesus did. That means you must not give sin a vote in the way you conduct your lives. Don’t give it the time of day. Don’t even run little errands that are connected with that old way of life. Throw yourselves wholeheartedly and full-time—remember, you’ve been raised from the dead!—into God’s way of doing things. Sin can’t tell you how to live. After all, you’re not living under that old tyranny any longer. You’re living in the freedom of God." Romans 6:11-14 (THE MESSAGE)

“Sin shall no longer be your master” is:

A test of our claim to be Christians

A promise of victory

An encouragement for hope and strength in the battle

"Therefore, I urge you, brothers and sisters, in view of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God—this is your true and proper worship.  Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will." Romans 12:1-2, NIV

You will find yourself fitting into every wonderful thing God wants to provide for his dearly loved child.

O Holy Night!

"Truly He taught us to love one another

PEACE with God, others, and myself is the good news of Christmas

Message Notes

The Law: the system of rules that regulates the actions and decisions of the people in that community.

Jesus changed it up!
Matthew 22:37-40; Galatians 5:14

PRIORITY LOVE for God, others, and self is the new law.

The Gospel:  the essence of or the good news about.

PEACE with God, others, and myself is the good news of Christmas.

O Holy Night | And the Soul Felt it's Worth

On starlit winter nights, skies midnight blue, millions of sparkling snowflakes drift to the earth and totally transform the landscape. The most humble dwelling becomes a snow castle and the muddiest mile a winter wonderland, wherever the snowflakes land. In the midst of a very unholy time and place, pure holiness and love descended into our world. What happened that night transformed the landscape of every receptive human heart and piece of the planet.
O Holy Night!

"It is the night of our dear Savior's birth
Long lay the world in sin and error pining
Til He appeared and the soul felt it's worth"

Shame is the great suffocater of self-worth.

Message Notes

Shame is the great suffocater of self-worth.

Shame is sinister.  It distorts first our image of God, then our image of ourselves and the world.

Jesus came into a world distorted by shame and gave us a new view of God.

When God is a loving Father, shame can forever dissipate.

How much do you believe you are worth?

O Holy Night | Long Lay the World in Sin and Error Pining

On starlit winter nights, skies midnight blue, millions of sparkling snowflakes drift to the earth and totally transform the landscape. O Holy Night!

"“O Holy Night, the stars are brightly shining,
It is the night of our dear Savior’s birth;
Long lay the world in sin and error pining….”

Who is this man?

Message Notes

Jesus gave the world the first important movement.

“In the new life there is no difference between Greeks and Jews, those who are circumcised and those who are not circumcised, or people who are foreigners or Scythians. There is no difference between slaves and free people. But Christ is in all believers, and Christ is all that is important.” Colossians 3:11

Jesus changed how we look at history.

Anno Domini (Year of our Lord)

Nero (68 A.D)

Napoleon (1821 A.D.)

Stalin (1953 A.D.)

O.M. Bakke’s book, “When Children Became People: The Birth of Childhood in Early Christianity”

Jesus shaped education

Oxford

Yale

Harvard

Jesus defined art

Jesus changed political theory

Jesus changed how we view human rights, worth, and dignity

“We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal and have been endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable rights…” Declaration of Independence

The question is not,  “Who was this man?”

The question is, “Who is this man?””
