Awe & Wonder | Missing the Wonder

Snow or Sunshine.  Fruitcake or Cut-out Cookies.  Wassail or Eggnog. Nativity Scene or Train Set. Santa Claus or Saint Nick. Maybe all of the above – and more?
Whatever ingredients you choose for a magical Christmas, two are absolute necessities: Awe and Wonder. You can’t have a truly Merry Christmas without them. But busyness, struggle, and, well…just life…can strip away the awe and wonder and leave you deflated and cynical instead.
This Advent Season, come get a dose of what you really need.  Put a little Awe back into this season of Wonder.

From the very first Christmas until this one - 2,017 or so Christmases later - some people are awestruck with wonder, and others wonder what the fuss is all about. What makes the difference?  It’s in the Story.

Message Notes

From the very first Christmas until this one, the world has divided into three groups:

Those who reject the wonder.
Those who wonder what the fuss is all about.
Those who are awestruck with wonder

Herod rejected the wonder.
It threatened his power and position.

Matthew 2

The people of Bethlehem overlooked the wonder.
They were busy with their own priorities.

Luke 2, Matthew 2

The shepherds and the wise men were transformed by the wonder.
The wise men prepared and sought the wonder.
The shepherds were surprised by the wonder, but they immediately responded with joy.

Don’t miss the wonder!

Most people generally think the fabulous future God has planned for his children an after-life in heaven. That is only part of the truth. God wants your future in this life, on this planet to be packed with purpose and enjoyment. It’s your inheritance, if you will choose it!

Message Notes

This is what the Lord Almighty, the God of Israel, says to all those I carried into exile from Jerusalem to Babylon: “Build houses and settle down; plant gardens and eat what they produce. Marry and have sons and daughters; find wives for your sons and give your daughters in marriage, so that they too may have sons and daughters. Increase in number there; do not decrease. Also, seek the peace and prosperity of the city to which I have carried you into exile. Pray to the Lord for it, because if it prospers, you too will prosper.” Yes, this is what the Lord Almighty, the God of Israel, says: “Do not let the prophets and diviners among you deceive you. Do not listen to the dreams you encourage them to have. They are prophesying lies to you in my name. I have not sent them,” declares the Lord.
This is what the Lord says: “When seventy years are completed for Babylon, I will come to you and fulfill my good promise to bring you back to this place. For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future. Then you will call on me and come and pray to me, and I will listen to you. You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart. I will be found by you,” declares the Lord, “and will bring you back from captivity. I will gather you from all the nations and places where I have banished you,” declares the Lord, “and will bring you back to the place from which I carried you into exile.”  Jeremiah 29:4-14

God is more interested in your future than your past.

God is more interested in your significance than your success.

Principles for the Path:

Accept where you are…as a starting point.

Forgive.

Give up the need to control everything.

Begin new habits.

Give up the someday syndrome.

Choose your input.

Connect.

Prioritize relationships.

Give.

Depend on God.

WE have a fulfilling future—

WE ARE CORNERSTONE.

Knowing the Father is priceless—being part of an expansive family makes it even more wonderful! Relating in God’s family gives you a place to belong and a place to become. And, it helps you get better with your family at home, too!

Message Notes

Now if the foot should say, “Because I am not a hand, I do not belong to the body,” it would not for that reason stop being part of the body. And if the ear should say, “Because I am not an eye, I do not belong to the body,” it would not for that reason stop being part of the body. If the whole body were an eye, where would the sense of hearing be? If the whole body were an ear, where would the sense of smell be? But in fact God has placed the parts in the body, every one of them, just as he wanted them to be. If they were all one part, where would the body be? As it is, there are many parts, but one body. The eye cannot say to the hand, “I don’t need you!” And the head cannot say to the feet, “I don’t need you!” On the contrary, those parts of the body that seem to be weaker are indispensable, and the parts that we think are less honorable we treat with special honor. And the parts that are not presentable are treated with special modesty, while our presentable parts need no special treatment. But God has put the body together, giving greater honor to the parts that lacked it, so that there should be no division in the body, but that its parts should have equal concern for each other. If one part suffers, every part suffers with it; if one part is honored, every part rejoices with it. Now you are the body of Christ, and each one of you is a part of it. 1 Corinthians 12: 15-27

There’s a big difference between simply being a biological parent, and being an investing, loving, providing, present Father. Of course, we are all God’s children in the sense that he created us, but what a difference it makes to know him as the One who invites us to call him “Daddy.”

Message Notes

“The Lord is like a father to his children, tender and compassionate to those who fear him.” Psalm 103:13

He is our SOURCE.

“There is one God, the Father, by whom all things were created, and for whom we live.” I Corinthians 8:6

He PROVIDES.

“So don’t worry about these things, saying, ‘What will we eat? What will we drink? What will we wear?’ These things dominate the thoughts of unbelievers, but your heavenly Father already knows all your needs.  Seek the Kingdom of God above all else, and live righteously, and he will give you everything you need.”  Matthew 6:31-33

He KNOWS and LOVES us intimately.

“So you have not received a spirit that makes you fearful slaves. Instead you received God’s Spirit when he adopted you as his own children. Now we call him ‘Abba Father’ (‘Daddy’). For his spirit joins with our spirits to affirm that we are God’s children.” Romans 8:14-17
“Every hair on your head is numbered.” Matthew 10:30

He EMPOWERS us.

“Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the LORD your God will be with you wherever you go." Joshua 1:9

When God re-fathers you, he makes you capable of being a redemptive and healing representation of Him in your world.
